Brian Roberts was given the day off by the O’s skipper today.
“Roberts is the only real leadoff hitter we have”, said Trembley. He was right. Roberts is leading the AL in doubles (25) and leading the O’s in runs (54) and in stolen bases (15). With Roberts out of the lineup, the O’s were in big trouble. With Roberts out of the lineup, Adam Jones was the leadoff hitter, with Ty Wiggington playing second base for Roberts, and Oscar Salazar getting the start at third base for a struggling third basemen Melvin Mora.
The O’s lost today 5-3 with the only runs they scored off of a single by Oscar Salazar, a sac fly by Nick Markakis, and a two out RBI single by Aubrey Huff. Although the O’s rallied, it was not enough to overcome the pitching, again.
David Hernandez got the start for the O’s giving up 3 Earned Runs off of 8 hits in 5 and 2/3 innings. Hernandez walked 3 and struck out three, leading his only blemish to Adam Dunn, when Dunn hit a monstrous home run in the fourth inning making the score 2-1 Nats. Hernandez moves to (1-2) while winning pitcher, Joe Lannan moves to an even (5-5).
The Orioles are looking forward to their next series against division rival The Boston Red Sox, who are 12.5 games ahead of the Birds. The O’s will see some of the games best pitching but will have Roberts back from his day off so they will be looking to take care of the dreaded BoSox fireballers. That is it until next time on the Baltimorioles…
